The Sylvia Harris Citizen Design Award

Sylvia Harris was universally recognized as our “Public Designer.” Throughout her career she believed that the same design thinking that created the iPhone or Amazon’s website should be applied to the design of public services and public information systems. She was particularly interested in empowering the citizenry by simplifying public access to government resources and information.

Through her work in design with governmental, non-profit, and private institutions, she enlisted top designers to serve their country. Among other projects, she commissioned creative teams that simplified the US Census form, streamlined the USPS delivery forms, and redesigned the Medicare experience.

To honor her vision and accomplishments, we proudly introduce the Sylvia Harris Citizen Design Award. This award will support projects that inform and inspire the public, and the dedicated designers who create them.

Conscious of challenges faced by designers of color, Sylvia sought to build more professional opportunities for them. The award will be given annually to a designer whose work is exemplary, visionary and dedicated to serving the public good.
