New York City has recently established a new island park on a former military base previously off limits to the public. CitizenR&D conducted a needs analysis that strategized how to help visitors easily navigate the vast grounds and locate the ferry landing. The firm conducted user experience studies and established wayfinding principles that inform signage and information system design. Research determined the importance of displaying maps in a new way: parallel to the ground on a table-like display.

Part of the research involved observing visitors getting lost.

We interviewed visitors to learn about the ways they use maps and understand directions.

Wayfinding guidelines were prepared for the sign design team at Pentagram.
