Over the last fifteen years, Boston’s leading medical center has grown to encompass sixteen buildings serving over 15,000 daily visitors. While expansion is a sign of success, Mass General’s growth spurt also generated a host of new problems. Hospital administration recognized the need to communicate more effectively in order to reduce stress levels, create a more pleasant environment, and improve traffic flow. Working with Two Twelve Associates, Sylvia Harris developed strategies and policies for integrated signage, public information systems, and exhibits. The final wayfinding program established design standards for all future renovations.

The strategy phase led to a renaming of major corridors to aid wayfinding.

The design program organized the display of all communications, not just signs, to reduce visual clutter.
